Elliot Stabler (b. 20 October, 1966) was a male detective who worked in the Special Victims Unit at NYPD. He worked at Special Victims from an unknown date to 2011.
He returned in the twenty-second season of SVU in the episode "Return Of The Prodigal Son" and is the main character in the SVU spin-off series Law & Order: Organized Crime.
Early Life[]
Elliot was born on October 20, 1966, in Bayside, Queens. He came from an Irish American Catholic family and is one of six siblings (three brothers and two sisters) though we never see them on screen. He also went to the Catholic Sisters of Mercy School. He was a devout Catholic whose faith sometimes complicated the cases he worked on.
His father, Joseph Stabler, was also a police officer. He lost his job and pension when he refused to testify about fellow police officers.
Elliot had a difficult relationship with his parents; his father physically and emotionally abused him, while his mother, Bernadette, suffered from bipolar disorder (a condition that Elliot's second oldest daughter, Kathleen, inherited) and once nearly killed him during a manic phase when Elliot was three years old. His mom decided to drive them down Broadway during a snow storm. She crashed the car into a lamp post following snow flakes. As a result, he has "erased his childhood" and maintains little contact with his mother.
After he left the Marines, Elliot attended Queens College, where he earned his B.A.
Elliot served in the U.S. Marine Corps and has a USMC tattoo of an eagle, globe, and anchor on his forearm. He did a tour during Desert Storm.
Return[]
In 2021, after spending ten years working and living in Rome, Stabler returned to New York where Kathy died of her injuries after being caught in a car bomb meant for Elliot. Elliot was reunited with SVU as they investigated the case, but they were ultimately taken off of it. Benson provided Stabler with all of the information and evidence she had on the case and Stabler, who hadn't come back for her awards ceremony, provided his old partner with the speech he had planned to give. Stabler successfully fought to be allowed to join the new Organized Crime Task Force that was being formed and survived another attempted assassination.
Stabler saved his son Eli from getting abducted by Izak Bekher under the orders of Richard Wheatley, his nemesis. However, he gets severely injured and nearly beaten to death. Stabler later arrests Izak for the murder of Manfredi Sinatra and Jocelyn Howell before releasing him on a deal that he would work for the NYPD to take down Wheatley.
Stabler later got involved with Angela Wheatley, the ex-wife of Richard Wheatley after sharing an awkward kiss. However, Izak reveals to Stabler that Angela ordered the hit on Kathy.
